Fundamentalism and the Scopes Trial.
Fundamentalism was emphasized protestant teachings and the belief that every word in the bible was true.(Lapsansky-Werner) They reaffirmed their belief in the fundamental or basic truths of their religion. Fundamentalism and modernism clashed head on in the Scopes Trial of 1925. The trial was the result of Tennessee’s passage of the Butler Act in March 1945. The law prevented the teaching of Darwinism. The Scopes trial represented the controversy of Darwinism in the education system. John Scopes was arrested for teaching the theory of evolution. He faced the court in July of 1925, the issue being whether schools can teach about evolution because it goes against the bible (Gilbert)
